Find the long word first

Every level hands you a ring of letters and a small crossword grid to fill. Swipe or click through the circle to spell a word, release to submit, and if it belongs in the puzzle it drops into its slot on the grid. The quickest way through a level is to hunt for the longest word the letters can make first. It usually uses most or all of them, and once it lands, the shorter crossing words tend to fall out of the spaces that remain.

Don't ignore the words that aren't on the grid, either. Any real word you spell from the letters counts toward a bonus tally even when it has no home in the crossword, so whenever you spot one, cash it in. It costs nothing and quietly adds up. Those extras won't finish the level, but on a slow board they keep something happening while you work out the words that do.

Read the grid, not just the ring

The crossword itself is a clue sheet, and most players never look at it. Every empty slot tells you the exact length of a word you're missing, which immediately rules out half your ideas. There's no point chasing a six-letter answer when the only unfilled slots hold four. Better still, once a couple of answers have dropped in, they fix letters inside every slot that crosses them. A five-cell slot with an N locked into its third cell isn't a blank; it's a pattern, and a pattern plus a handful of ring letters usually narrows to one or two candidates. Work it the way you'd work a normal crossword: solve the obvious word, then reread every slot it touches before going back to staring at the circle.

Anagram habits that shake words loose

Random swiping finds the easy words and then stalls, so search systematically instead. Park common endings first: if the ring holds E and D, E and R, or I, N and G, set those aside as a suffix in your head and rearrange whatever's left. Try each vowel in the second position, because English adores consonant-vowel openings. Pair consonants that like travelling together: TH, CH, ST, BR, CL. An S in the ring is a hint all by itself, since setters lean on plurals and verb forms, so any four-letter answer you've found probably has a five-letter cousin. Above all, treat every found word as a seed. Handcrafted rings are packed with anagram families, and once LATE appears, TALE, TEAL and STEAL are rarely far behind.

When you get stuck

• Start with the short three- and four-letter words you can see at a glance; they often fill the crossing cells that then reveal where the longer answers sit.
• Say the letters out loud once. Hearing them recruits a different part of your word memory than staring does, and odd as it sounds, it works.
• Sweep the words you've already found for smaller words hiding inside them, and for one-letter extensions still in the ring. An added S or D routinely turns one answer into two.
• Use the Shuffle button to rearrange the ring when your eyes glaze over. The same letters in a new arrangement often shake a word loose.

A short history of the letter ring

The circle-of-letters crossword is a young format. It took over phones in the late 2010s, when Wordscapes and a wave of similar apps turned the swipe-to-spell ring into one of the most-played word genres anywhere, all of it resting on the crossword itself, which Arthur Wynne invented for the New York World back in 1913. The bonus counter softens the grind, too: a word that turns out not to be in the grid still pays you, so casting a wide net is rewarded rather than punished. Clear every cell and the next board loads. Nothing is rushing you, so treat each level as a small construction project rather than a race, and let the stubborn last word come to you. It usually arrives about four seconds after you stop forcing it.
