Tic-Tac-Toe Is a Draw. These Four Games Fix It

Play tic-tac-toe against someone who knows what they're doing and the result is decided before the first mark: a draw, every time, forever. This isn't pessimism, it's mathematics. Tic-tac-toe is what game theorists call a solved game, meaning the complete tree of possibilities has been mapped and the outcome under perfect play from both sides is known. The tree is small enough that a patient person can walk it by hand, which students of game theory have been assigned for decades, and the verdict never changes. Neither player can force a win against correct defense. Our tic-tac-toe makes the point playable: the Hard computer plays perfectly, and the best you will ever do against it is split the point.

Why the draw is inevitable

The board is the culprit. Nine squares produce eight winning lines, and those lines overlap so heavily that defense is always cheaper than attack. The center square touches four lines, the corners three each, and a defender who takes the center or answers it correctly can meet every threat with a block that creates one of their own. The only path to victory is the fork, a move creating two threats at once, and perfect defense denies every fork before it forms. First move offers an edge in opportunities, never a forced win.

What tic-tac-toe teaches, then, isn't how to win; it's the vocabulary of every deeper board game: threats, blocks, forks, tempo. Which is exactly why designers have spent a century building games that keep that vocabulary and break the draw. Here's the ladder, in rising order of unsolvedness.

Rung one: make the board a maze of boards

Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe plays on a three by three grid of tic-tac-toe boards, and one rule detonates the old certainty: the square you choose inside a mini board decides which mini board your opponent must play in next. Every move is two decisions wearing one coat, the mark you make and the destination you force. Sacrificing a mini board to dodge a dangerous send is routine; the fork returns as a monster that spans nine boards at once. Unlike its ancestor, the ultimate version has not been solved, and between humans it plays like a genuinely open game. If tic-tac-toe is the alphabet, this is the first real sentence.

Rung two: add gravity

Connect Four keeps the lines-on-a-grid soul, stretches the target to four in a row, and adds one physical constraint: discs fall to the lowest empty slot. Gravity makes the vertical dimension a resource, since every move you play builds a step your opponent might stand on. And here the mathematics delivers its second famous verdict: Connect Four is solved too, cracked in 1988, and with perfect play the first player wins by starting in the center column. The catch is that the winning line is astronomically hard to memorize, so between people the game stays rich, a solved game that behaves like an unsolved one at every kitchen table. The center-column principle survives as its one portable lesson: the middle touches the most lines, in this family, always.

Rung three: remove the ceiling

Gomoku plays the same idea on a big open grid: five in a row wins, stones never move, and the board is large enough that the defensive overlap which strangles tic-tac-toe simply runs out. Open threats of three and four must be answered the move they appear, double threats multiply, and attack finally outruns defense. The mathematics has a verdict here as well: in 1993 Victor Allis proved that free-style gomoku, the unrestricted version, is a forced win for the first player. Serious tournament play answers with restriction rules that rebalance the opening, and casual play never notices, because no human carries a thirty-five-ply proof in their head. On the board it feels like what tic-tac-toe promised and couldn't deliver: real attacking chess with stones.

The view from the top rung

Line up the four games and you can watch a single idea grow up. Nine squares: solved, drawn, exhausted in an afternoon. Nested boards: unsolved, tactical, still cheap to learn. Gravity: solved in theory, inexhaustible in practice. Open board: solved in the mathematician's favorite direction, first player wins, and still deep enough to sustain a tournament scene. The pattern behind them all is that three-in-a-row thinking, threats, forks and tempo, is one of the great load-bearing structures in games, sturdy enough to carry any amount of added weight.
