How to play Euchre

You and a computer partner take on two computer opponents using a 24-card deck. One card is turned up, and in turn each player may "order up" that suit as trump or pass; if everyone passes, a second round lets you name a different suit. Trump is powerful: the Jack of the trump suit is the right bower and the highest card, and the Jack of the same colour is the left bower and counts as trump too. You then play five tricks and must follow the suit that was led when you can. The team that called trump scores one point for taking three or four tricks, two for all five, and four for a solo "alone" sweep — but if they fall short the other team gets two points. First team to ten points wins.

Euchre — frequently asked questions

What are the bowers in Euchre?

The two Jacks of the trump colour are the strongest cards. The Jack of the trump suit is the right bower (highest card in the game) and the Jack of the other suit of the same colour is the left bower (second highest) — and the left bower counts as a trump card, not as its printed suit.

How does bidding and "ordering up" work?

A card is turned face up after the deal. Going around the table, each player can order up that suit as trump or pass. If all four pass, a second round lets players name any other suit as trump instead of passing again.

What does going alone mean?

When your team names trump you may choose to play the hand alone — your partner sits out. If you then take all five tricks by yourself your team scores four points instead of two, but you get no help, so it is a bold move reserved for very strong hands.

Why can't I play the card I want?

You must follow the suit that was led if you hold a card in it. Remember the left bower counts as a trump, not as its printed suit, so it does not count toward following that off-colour suit. Only the highlighted cards in your hand are legal to play.
