The grid flashes a sequence of tiles. When it stops, click the tiles in the same order. Each round the sequence grows by one. A single wrong tap ends the game at the level you reached. Concentrate and chunk the pattern to push your streak higher.

In the early 1970s a Canadian researcher named Philip Corsi built a very plain test: nine wooden blocks fixed to a board. The examiner tapped some of them in order, and the person being tested tapped the same blocks back in the same order. Get it right and the sequence grew by one. That test, still known as the Corsi block-tapping task, became a standard way to measure how much spatial order a person can hold in mind, and most healthy adults top out around five or six taps. Sequence Memory is that test with the blocks drawn in light. The grid flashes a run of tiles, you click them back in the same order, and each round adds one more step. A single wrong tap ends the run at the level you reached. So when the game starts to sting around level six or seven, that is not you failing. Turn the flashes into one path

The order is everything, which is why memorising the tiles as a loose set does not work. The strongest method is to stop seeing separate flashes and see a single path: an imaginary line your finger will trace from tile to tile, like joining dots. A route through the grid is one thing to remember. Five unrelated taps are five things. Psychologists call this move chunking, and it is the oldest trick in the memory book. George Miller's famous 1956 paper argued that people hold about seven items in short-term memory, but that a chunk counts as one item no matter how much it packs inside. That is the loophole this game lets you use. A zigzag, an L shape, a little triangle: name the shape and the shape carries the taps for you.

Chunk it, and keep a rhythm

As the pattern grows, break it into short phrases: the first three taps, then the next two, then the new bit. A nine-step pattern held as three small shapes is far lighter than nine raw taps. Let your hand ride the rhythm of the flashes as they play, because muscle memory often recalls a motion your conscious mind has misplaced. And remember that only the final flash is new each round. The game replays everything you already know and adds one step at the end, so run the familiar part smoothly and spend your full attention on locking down that single fresh tile. Giving tiles quick names helps too. A quiet corner, middle, top spoken in your head stores a second copy of the sequence in verbal memory, and two copies beat one when a run gets long.

Where runs actually die

Watch the ways a good run ends, because they repeat. The first killer is rushing the playback: your memory had it, but your finger slipped a tile early. Slow down, since no clock is chasing your answer. The second is staring at each tile as it lights up. Soften your gaze and watch the whole grid instead, the way you would watch a ball rather than the players, so the path registers as one moving line. The third is rehearsing the old part of the pattern while the new flash plays, which is exactly when you miss it. Watch first, rehearse after. The last is emotional: after a near miss, players dive straight into the next round annoyed and drop an easy level. Take one breath, then start. One wrong tap is the whole game, so calm is worth more here than speed will ever be. And if you are training for a personal best, play in short bursts. Memory tests reward a fresh head, and ten focused minutes will beat an hour of tired grinding every single time. Your best level climbs fastest in the first few runs of a session, then slides as fatigue creeps in, so quit while the graph still points up.
