How to play Hexa Merge
Slide every tile at once in one of six directions across the hexagonal board. When two tiles of the same number collide they merge into one worth double, and a new 2 or 4 appears after each move. On a keyboard use Q W E for the upper three directions and A S D for the lower three; on a phone, swipe or tap the arrows around the board. Keep merging to grow your score. The game ends when no move changes the board.
Six directions, not four
If you've played 2048, the merging is familiar: two matching tiles collide and become one worth double, and a fresh 2 or 4 drops in after every move. What's different is the hexagonal board and its six slide directions instead of four. On a keyboard that's Q, W and E for the three upper slides and A, S and D for the three lower ones; on a phone you swipe or tap the arrows around the edge. Those extra two directions feel like freedom at first and quietly become a liability, because it's far easier to scatter your tiles across the board when there are six ways to move. Take a beat before each slide and picture where the whole board shifts, since more directions give you more ways to make a mess as well as more ways to combine.
Anchor one corner and feed it
The core 2048 lesson carries straight over: pick a corner of the hexagon for your biggest tile and keep it pinned there. Then choose three of the six directions that all push toward that corner and treat them as your working set. The other three are for emergencies only. Six directions is freedom you mostly shouldn't use. Every stray move that drags your big tile off its corner is how a promising board falls apart, so discipline beats improvisation. Keep matching values lined up along an edge that leads to the anchor, and a single slide can fire several merges at once. Corners work because of geometry: a corner cell has the fewest neighbours on the board, so a tile parked there gets shoved around by the fewest directions. The middle is the opposite, open to traffic from everywhere, which is why big tiles that wander into the centre tend to get stuck and die there.
A slide worth studying
Picture one edge of the board holding 4, 4, 2, 2 in a line, and slide everything toward that edge's corner. The two 4s collide into an 8 and the two 2s into a 4, so one move produced two merges and the line now reads 8, 4. Feed another 4 down the same lane on a later turn and the pair becomes an 8, which then meets the first 8 and makes 16. That's the whole game in miniature: build little convoys of equal tiles in one lane and collapse them toward the anchor. One caution: a tile only merges once per slide. Three 4s in a lane become an 8 and a leftover 4, not a 16, so even-numbered convoys pack down cleanly and odd ones leave a straggler.
Endgame checks
The game ends only when no direction would change anything, meaning every tile is boxed in by mismatched neighbours. A board can look completely full and still hold a move, because two equal tiles touching somewhere is all it takes. Before you give up on a stuck board, walk through all six directions in your head and check each one for a touching pair. And when space gets tight, stop chasing points for a few turns and just tidy: pull equal tiles into the same lane even if nothing merges yet. Open space is worth exactly as much here as in any tile-sliding puzzle. It's the breathing room that keeps a run alive, and the player who keeps two or three cells free almost always outlasts the one who fills the board chasing one more merge. Tidiness is a score multiplier in slow motion.
From a weekend project to the hex board
The game this descends from was famously small. Gabriele Cirulli, a 19-year-old Italian developer, built 2048 over a weekend and put it on the web for free in March 2014. It borrowed its doubling idea from 1024 and from Threes, a phone puzzle released a few weeks earlier, and within a month millions of people were playing. Hex variants like this one came later, adding two directions to see how the geometry changed the puzzle. The numbers themselves carry a nice secret: every tile is a stack of starter 2s in disguise. A 256 is 128 of them, compressed through seven rounds of merging, which is why big tiles feel so heavy to move and why losing one to a careless slide stings the way it does.

Why didn't my two equal tiles merge?
They only combine when they actually collide along the direction you chose. On a hex board each direction has its own lanes, so equal tiles in different lanes never meet on that slide, and a mismatched tile sitting between them blocks the merge too. Line them up in one lane first.
