From Pentominoes to 2048: The Falling-Block Family Tree

The first Tetris had no graphics. The Elektronika-60 that Alexey Pajitnov programmed at the Soviet Academy of Sciences in 1984 was a text terminal, so the falling pieces were drawn with bracket characters doubling as squares. No color, no sound worth mentioning, no title screen — and it still spread through Moscow's research institutes on floppy disks faster than anyone could account for. Every merge game on your phone today, every wood-block puzzle in the charts, descends from that screenful of punctuation.

1984: seven shapes in a Moscow lab

Pajitnov's day job was speech-recognition research. His hobby was puzzles — particularly pentominoes, the twelve shapes you can build from five squares, a family the mathematician Solomon Golomb had formalized decades earlier. Twelve five-square pieces proved unwieldy on a computer, so Pajitnov cut the count to four squares per piece, which leaves exactly seven shapes. He named the result for what it was: tetra, the Greek four, crossed with tennis, his favorite sport. Then came the two strokes of genius: pieces fall whether you're ready or not, and a completed row vanishes. That second rule is the sneaky one — the game destroys your progress as its reward, so the board never fills up with your own history and the pressure never lets go.

Note what mattered for the rest of the family tree: none of it needed graphics. When Nintendo bundled Tetris with the 1989 Game Boy — four monochrome shades, a screen the size of a matchbox — the pairing sold in the tens of millions and put falling blocks in more pockets than any machine before or since. The presentation was still barely a step above the bracket characters. The design was the entire product. Our own Blocks makes the same bet in deliberate black and white — rotate, drop, clear, speed up. Forty years on, the loop needs no help.

1990 and 1991: the blocks learn to match

The first big mutation swapped completed lines for matching. Sega's Columns (1990) dropped stacks of gems you reordered as they fell, clearing any three in a row, and Nintendo answered the same year with Dr. Mario's falling pills. Then Puyo Puyo — from the Japanese studio Compile, in 1991 — added the idea that actually stuck: the chain. When a cleared group vanishes, everything above falls into new positions and can form new groups, so the real skill isn't reacting to what's falling now. It's deliberately engineering an avalanche four moves deep, then triggering the whole thing with one drop. Versus play, where your chains dump garbage on an opponent's board, turned a solitary genre into a fighting game — and chain-building remains one of the most satisfying skills in puzzledom. 2014: gravity out, merging in

For two decades the genre iterated inside Tetris's silhouette. The real break came from touchscreens. Threes, released in February 2014 by designer Asher Vollmer and the tiny team at Sirvo, threw out gravity entirely: the whole four-by-four board slides one step per swipe, a 1 and a 2 combine into a 3, and equal tiles double from there. It took more than a year of prototyping to arrive at something that small, and it shows — Threes is still the tightest design in the merge family, a game where every single swipe moves every tile you own and half your skill is learning to hate that fact politely.

Within weeks came the clones, and then the phenomenon. Gabriele Cirulli, a nineteen-year-old developer, built 2048 over a weekend in March 2014, riffing on a Threes-derived clone called 1024. He put it on the open web — free, no install, source code public — and it reached millions of players almost immediately. Because the code was open, the internet promptly produced endless variants: meme editions, crossover jokes, versions of versions. For a stretch of 2014, 2048 was less a game than a weather system. Partly that's because doubling powers of two scratches something primal. Mostly it's because there was nothing between you and the game: no store, no download, just a link that worked. Threes is the better game; 2048 was the better idea about distribution, and it's the reason a browser-native games site like ours exists at all. It's also more beatable than it looks — the corner strategy carries most people to their first 2048 tile.

Today: the grid-fill hybrids

The newest branch quietly removes the falling altogether. Woodoku-style games hand you polyomino pieces — Golomb's shapes again, seventy years later — to place anywhere on a nine-by-nine board that clears rows, columns, and three-by-three boxes. It's Tetris's pieces laid onto sudoku's geometry with no timer and no gravity: pure spatial budgeting, where you're always three placements from a locked board and the game ends not with a topped-out stack but with a shrug — nothing fits. Our version plays it straight, and it tends to hook exactly the people who bounced off Tetris because they hated being rushed.

Line the eras up and the through-line is almost embarrassingly simple: a handful of shapes, a grid, one rule that makes full things vanish. Everything else — gravity, chains, merging, wood grain — is a variation some decade tried and the next one kept or discarded. That last part is less a style choice than a homecoming. This genre was born on a screen that couldn't draw anything else, and it has never once needed more.
